BioDivER
BioDiversity Environmental Reporting
Companies in the European Union have to report on non-financial information, particularly in relation to environmental, social and governance (ESG) criteria. BioDivER, a web-based information platform, uses satellite data and spatial analysis algorithms to monitor and assess biodiversity, an important component of ESG regulations. This platform enables companies to precisely analyse biodiversity aspects at their sites and use the results for ESG reporting.
Challenge
Monitoring and reporting on biodiversity is a major challenge, as biodiversity is a complex and not directly observable concept. It requires analysing ecosystem services that act as indicators of biodiversity. Environmental changes and their impact on the ecosystems on which biodiversity depends must also be taken into account. BioDivER addresses this challenge by monitoring five priority ecosystem services: surface water, groundwater, climate regulation, flood and storm protection, and mass stabilisation and erosion control.
Project Objective
The aim of BioDivER is to provide companies with an easily accessible and effective solution to assess and report on the biodiversity aspects of their sites. By utilising high-quality satellite data and advanced analytical tools, companies will be able to accurately and efficiently fulfil their environmental responsibilities in the context of ESG reporting.
Realisation
BioDivER collects and analyses environmental data in the extended surroundings of company sites in order to assess potential risks and protective factors for selected ecosystem services. Various terrain and land use parameters are included in the analysis, for example to assess susceptibility to natural hazards and the absorption capacity of the soil. A comparison of several data sets makes it possible to map and record changes over time. The use of up-to-date satellite data and automated technologies enables efficient monitoring of ecological parameters and biodiversity trends.
